------ AUTOMOBILE 101 -----
Drive Shaft fault is a very annoying fault especially front wheel vehicles with flat engines.
Drive shafts pull out for many reasons.
Major reason is bad or absence of Outer shaft KEY LOCK. That lock looks like ring used in locking the shaft rod inside the outer cup.
Most fairly used/ tokumbo shaft in the market do have this issue. About 85% of them dont have key lock. The reason is thus:
Most fairly used shaft in the market are not follow come but coupled inside that market, i dont have problem with that but where i have problem is the process used in the coupling.
The process used in coupling them is so crude.
They forcefully hammer off the cups, breaking the key lock and after coupling they hardly install a new key lock. That small key lock is more than N2,000 so if the seller couples 100 shafts do you expect him to replace all key locks at that price but this is where you the buyer have to come in by insisting to confirm it has the key.
Another cause is they mostly use MATCHING CUPS for the coupling instead of the exact one. Their language is always "oga it dey work am, no be today we don dey do am".
Once they confirm the number of teeth on the shaft is same (like 26, 28, 30, 32 etc) they couple without considering the cups are of different sizes, lenght and width. Now after the coupling when you measure the lenght of the complete shaft from Inner Cup, Shaft rod to Outer Cup with its exact own you will notice difference in lenght and shortage as little as 1 inch means a lot, when you turn your steering to the end the shaft pulls off.
Another cause is bad cup cover/ rubber hose. If yours is bad or not available at all sand and dirts will go in and dry off the grease inside the cup and once the bearing inside get worn out you will start experiencing kakakaka noise while driving or turning.
▪︎When your shaft pulls from the outer cup the cause is mostly the key lock.
▪︎When it pulls from the inner cup its mostly because of incoherent shaft lenght.
▪︎When your shaft makes kakakaka noise while turning know the bearings inside your outer cup of that noisy side are worn out.
▪︎When your shaft makes noise while engaging gear 1 or reverse know the inner cup or the bearings have worn out.
Next time your in the market to buy shaft always insist on what you want not what they have.
